Frightful is another extreme metal band hailing from Gdansk, Poland. Unlike most other extreme metal bands from Poland who plays black metal, Frightful is a fine, and relatively young, representative of Poland’s death metal scene.

Band’s line-up consists of following four musicians; Oskar Wańka (vocals & bass), Paweł Snarski (guitars), Eryk Jakubczyk (guitars) and Krzysztof Pochranowicz (drums). The band have already released a couple of EPs since its formation, but now time has come to unleash their debut full-length entitled, What Lies Ahead.

Frightful has no intention to reinvent the genre, but rather just to enjoy creating some well-played and tightly executed death/thrash metal tracks. There’s no room for boredom as there’s not one second of being wasted on What Lies Ahead, no filler chugs, just sharp and deliberate death/thrash delivered with a striking precision. The band successfully blends the speed and aggression of thrash metal with the brutality and technicality of death metal. Thus we can hear some varied, snarling, rasping, guttural and confident vocals, riffing is savage and muscular, with relentlessly aggressive, frantic and robust rhythm section, brutal and downtuned bass, and pummeling and galloping drums.

Production is stunning, being very tight and lively (but also raw in all the right ways), and with all instruments and the vocals are brilliantly crafted within the overall sound. Frightful is a shining gem among all the other mediocre bands out there, listeners will not be disappointed with the listen to this eight-tracker debut.
