Wode, aside from being an Old English word meaning, among other things, possessed, also refers to a British Black Metal-adjacent quartet that has been active for nearly fifteen years at this point.
In that time they have released one Demo and four Full-length releases; Over the span of which the band members themselves admit to having found their own unique sound as well as approach to music,
evolving from a band clearly heavily inspired by Darkthrone merged with Doom influences to something… More. Far, far more.
In many ways Wode brings back pleasant memories of seeing their kinsmen Wodensthrone and Winterfylleth on stage for the first time. A Black Metal act with a strong undercurrent of atmosphere permeating every syllable,
every stroke across a string, every blow on a drum. Where this particular band diverges from the two memoirs of mine is in the fine detail.
Yes, they are still, at their core, strongly influenced by Black Metal. But they manage to suffuse it with the overall feel of Doom Metal, making the entire experience far gloomier. And I am nothing if not a glutton for that particular type of punishment.
So if you are curious about how to make the cosmos come across as even more bleak (without delving directly into pure Funeral Doom territory), Wode is most likely a band for you. It certainly found its way onto my watch list.
The most recent release is entitled Uncrossing The Keys and contains nine tracks, adding up to forty-two minutes – An admitted change on behalf of the band, since their previous releases all had the same runtime, but only six tracks to compensate.
