Lyrre – Nothing Is Promised

Nothing Is Promised is the sophomore album by Lyrre, a band comprised of Michalina Malisz (hurdy-gurdy & vocals), Piotr Martuś (guitars), Miłosz Buśko (bass), and Tomasz Młóciński (drums). Founded by the former Eluveitie (folk/melodic death metal from Switzerland) hurdy-gurdy player Michalina Malisz and her husband Piotr Martuś, this Polish quartet has crafted a deeply emotional, 34-minute record consisting of seven tracks in what I would call “a brilliant blend of atmospheric, symphonic, folk, prog, and dark metal.”

Thus, on their second full-length, they show an ability to balance a heavy, raw metal sound with dreamlike, symphonic, and ethereal melodies. The album juxtaposes aggressive metal riffs with quiet, delicate acoustic passages. Furthermore, it features beautiful organic arrangements where traditional folk instruments (like the hurdy-gurdy) weave seamlessly into the metal structure instead of feeling tacked on. The overall sound is weathered, grounded, and timeless, mirroring the finest dark folk traditions.

Thematically, Nothing Is Promised centers on the psychological weight of human existence and adapting to uncertainty, exploring “inner landscapes of fear, hope, and acceptance.” This seven-track release features refined, flawless production alongside mature, sophisticated, and reflective songwriting. As such, it comes highly recommended to fans of atmospheric, dark, and folk-infused metal, as well as those who appreciate unique traditional instrumentation blended with heavy, modern riffing.

The two songs I find myself replaying the most are “The Well” and “Oracle.” The former is a hypnotic and atmospheric track that leans into progressive metal tones, while the closer, “Oracle,” provides an epic, emotional finale that acts as a lingering, dreamlike denouement to the album.
