Profane Burial is a self-proclaimed ‘cinematic’ Black Metal band, one that aspires to mix together the epic scores of a film soundtrack with that of a heavily melodious Black Metal sound – I seem to recall the term ‘Symphonic Black Metal’ being coined back in 1993 when Dimmu Borgir somewhat popularized the genre. And Profane Burial, or at the very least the three Norwegian members that make up the band definitely draw a lot of inspiration from their kinsmen; That being said, however, the world as well as the musical trends within the different genres have changes since then, meaning that while they certainly do contain a superficial resemblence to the before-mentioned band, the two decades between their inceptions are nevertheless still prevalent throughout all of My Plateu, the second Full-length release of the band.

For starters, the overall sound of Profane Burial is significantly less, shall we say – Ample. Where Dimmu Borgir tends to think of their albums as veritable walls of sound, My Plateu is a significantly more restrained affair. More clean-cut, more precise. This has several advantages, the most noticeable of which allowing the individual instruments their time to shine and add to the coherent whole in varying means and measures – Which proves very effective when it comes to building an atmosphere, alongside the high-pitched growls and the (admittedly, almost) mandatory blast beats.

Honestly, I fail to find the words to describe the album any better than that. If you are looking to spend thirty-five minutes across six tracks in the vein of a modernised Dimmu Borgir or Carach Angren, look no further than Profane Burial. But then again, that should hardly come as a surprise, Norway practically shaped modern Black Metal, no reason not to assume they cannot do it again.
