Insepulto – Undead... But Not Alive - 66%

Insepulto is a Costa Rican-based Oldschool Death Metal duo with theoretically quite a few years under their belt – The original incarnation of the band draws roots back more than thirty years from what I have managed to dig up. Back then however, the band must have been either a purely live act or severely limited in what they released since I have been unable to find sources for any releases older than 2010 where they released their first Demo. From this point onwards however, the band seems to have crystallized into their current stable form with two consistent members taking on instrumental duties on a regular basis; Ending up in the before-mentioned Demo as well as, so far, three Full-length releases. The latest of which saw its inception late last year, carrying the moniker Undead… But Not Alive. And while the current members themselves might not have been part of this band prior to the current millenia (my sources are a bit unsure about whether or not one of them is a founding member), it cannot be denied that both of them both have an impressive amount of experience, having played in eighteen other bands between them as well as work well together.

In fact, based on the music on display on their latest record alone, the only thing giving away the fact that it is a newer release is how crisp the sound is. It is very well mixed and purged of many of the impurities found in older (nineties and older) releases, putting the gravelling rolls of the vocals front and centre aside from the passages where the simplistic hammering of the guitar riffs manage to overpower both that and the relentless drums.

The lyrics, much like the music itself is kept both simple, to the point and very catchy while aptly all circling around the themes of death, further cementing their classical approach.

Ten tracks spread across some forty-odd minutes (if you count the instrumental introduction to the record) that does nothing in the sense of reinventing the wheel nor putting an original spin on things – Just old fashioned, angry Death Metal, just the way I personally prefer it.

Recommended for fans of Nunslaughter, Obituary and early Entombed.
