Witchunters is a veteran Italian heavy metal band formed back in 1982. Despite a few brief breaks over the decades—including a completely uninterrupted run for the last seventeen years—they are still going strong. The current lineup of this Modena-based (Emilia-Romagna) outfit features Cristiano Agnani (bass), Cesare Vaccari (drums), Miguel Esteban Ramirez (guitars), Fulvio Milone (guitars), and Marcello Monti (vocals).
Their double album, Different Universe, released via Underground Symphony, is a massive release that pairs a 70-minute traditional heavy metal album with a bonus 67-minute demo anthology. Disc One features the core Different Universe tracks, while Disc Two contains the 1985–1999 More Than a Demos Anthology.
By blending traditional metal instrumentation with a striking science-fiction theme, the band creates a rich sonic backdrop for a dystopian, cinematic universe. The music throughout this lengthy runtime stays fiercely true to old-school heavy metal roots across both the main tracks and historical demos. Dual guitarists Ramirez and Milone deploy fast, heavy riffs and sharp solos to build the cold, perilous atmosphere of a sci-fi landscape. They utilize distortion pedals to inject an aggressive edge into the music, beautifully mimicking the conflict in their dystopian storyline.
Meanwhile, Agnani’s bass anchors the material with low, thumping notes, constructing a dark, heavy foundation that drives the narrative forward. Behind the kit, Vaccari delivers intense rhythm patterns and fast double-bass beats, providing a high-energy, driving pace. Finally, vocalist Marcello Monti uses a powerful, dramatic heavy metal delivery. Acting as the ultimate storyteller, he navigates the sci-fi plot and highlights the emotional weight of characters trapped in this alternate reality.
Two key tracks stand out from this extensive collection, which I highly recommend to both legacy followers and newer listeners:
– “Welcome to Darkness Town”: The epic, seven-minute opening track of the main album. It perfectly establishes the dark, classic 1980s heavy metal atmosphere that originally defined the band’s unreleased 1997 recording sessions. (Watch the official music video below). This track marks the first chapter in a video trilogy that functions as a 20-minute dystopian short film.)
– “Shadow of the Rainbow”: This song serves as the core pillar of the collection because it bridges both eras of the band. It appears on Disc One as a fully realized studio track, and returns on Disc Two as a raw, historical archival recording.
The production of Different Universe perfectly balances gritty, old-school Italian heavy metal with cinematic science fiction. Because the primary album was originally recorded in 1997 but sat in a vault until its recent release, the sound serves as an authentic time capsule of late-90s underground metal. The sonic profile shifts depending on the disc: Disc One delivers a cohesive, fully realized 1997 studio sound, while Disc Two switches to a raw, unrefined archival environment that preserves the natural tape hiss and early underground aesthetics of their early years.
The visual presentation by Jahn Vision Art directly ties into the deep narrative style of the album, setting up a grim, futuristic world. The artwork reflects a dark, eerie setting that matches tracks like “Welcome to Darkness Town.” It perfectly captures the feeling of a literal “different universe” or a parallel timeline where this music slept undisturbed for decades.
Potential buyers will get incredible value and plenty of runtime for their money across these two discs. For further information and purchasing options for Different Universe, visit the label’s official store.
