Varnheim is Polish black metal quartet comprised of Patryk Włódarczyk (vocals & guitars), Mateusz Waśkiewicz (guitars), Wojciech Gąsiorowski (bass) and Paweł Duda (drums). The band was formed in Płock, in 2012. The band released their self-titled debut in 2019 and followed it up with their sophomore effort entitled Aura (2022).

Now signed to the Godz ov War Productions the band released their third album Void earlier this year (2025). It consists of only four quite lengthy tracks as listed below:

Tracklist:

01. Vengeance
02. Onwards
03. Inwards
04. Downwards

With each track comprising Void ranging from nine to twelve minutes in length, things tend to get epic, as the band creates evocative and oppressive soundscapes, with suffocating, introspective and melancholic atmosphere. Despite of the obvious similarities, each of these four tracks still has its own unique identity and characteristics. They manage to do so by adding interesting textures to each of the four songs presented on Void.

For the lyrical aspect, with this record they decided have the two first songs, “Vengeance” and “Onwards“ in English, while the lyrics for two last two songs they decided to leave in Polish – by the way both sounds so natural, organic and coherent with the character of the songs. I especially enjoyed the two tracks in their native Polish, as it still sounds a bit mysterious yet serves the overall nature of the songs perfectly. Having said that, their main focus is music, which means they compose the album and riffs before writing any lyrics. It’s working very fine here! Furthermore, Void features a dense and powerful production that enhances its dark and oppressive soundscape mentioned above.

Conclusion; throughout the entirety of its forty-two-minute runtime, Varnheim remains dedicated, interesting, captivating, pulling off a powerful performance. Put differently; Void takes the listeners on a harrowing journey through inner turmoil, despair and through a confrontation with their own darkness. The album skillfully combines fast black metal aggression with beautiful, unique guitar melodies, making for a captivating and emotional experience. Thus, I believe this deeply emotional masterpiece album will resonate with fans of some deep, ancient and primordial level, questioning the very meaning of life. Especially recommended for fans of the likes of Mgła, Uada, Behemoth, Hate, Misþyrming and Satyricon in particular.
