Toughness – Prophecy

Toughness is a Polish Death Metal quartet, one that teamed up during the early days of the global lockdown. Judging by their lyrical themes, the common demoninator seems to be rooted in escapism from the reality most of us were forced to live through at the time, instead focusing on ancient mythology, other world and the abstract as a concept. So far, so interesting – Not to mention very needed given the state of the world at inception.

A few years after banding together, the band released a Demo entitled Prophecy – Their first album overall, containing four tracks that overall spans a grand total of nearly nineteen minutes. As for the music itself?
Gritty. Dirty. Slightly off-key. Slow. All the things that I think of when I consider what to expect from a Black Metal Demo. I now learn that all the same beats work just fine when used to create an old-school Death Metal Demo as well. Shouldn’t be surprising considering their shared history, but nice to have it confirmed regardless.

Decent length for a Demo, excellent replay value for a first release. Definitely a recommendation for fans of Demilich, Morbid Angel and Bloood Incantation.
