Hermetic Evolution – Re:Evolution
18th November 2025Species – Changelings
Label: 20 Buck Spin / Release date: 19th September 2025
Prior to listening to this release from 20 Buck Spin I thought of it as just another metal release from the always inspiring and exciting metal scene in Poland. Luckily, I was pleasantly surprised as these guys doesn’t sound like any other of their countrymen. I’m referring to a Polish trio named Species and their line-up of; Piotr Drobina (bass & vocals ), Przemysław Hampelski (drums/percussion ) and Michał Kępka (guitars).
Changelings is the title for a second full-length album from this unconventional Polish power trio. It consists of following seven track:
1. Inspirit Creation
2. The Essence
3. Waves of Time
4. Voyager
5. Born of Stitch and Flesh
6. Terror Unknown
7. Biological Masterpiece
Changelings is something I’ve never heard anything like this before. It’s a journey through a veritable rainbow of progressive thrash metal, delivered in an astonishing precision and more important a clear vision. On Changelings this powerful Polish trio embraces the sound of a traditional Euro-thrash aggression mixed with early death metal and some modern progressive tendencies. They do so without a compromise and without losing the speed and aggression that is an essential ingredients in this kind of music. Their songwriting, and handling of the instruments, is consistent, with special focus on the bass, guitar, and drumming, which are complex and impressive, yet baffling. Thus, despite of the technicality, and its lengthy nature (a runtime of around 40 minutes and 7 tracks!), the songs remain catchy and interesting. Meanwhile, two tracks are a stand-out sonic experiences that I have to mention here. The first one of a track named “Voyager” for two reasons; it features fantastic guest synthesizer parts by Krzysztof Buffi (a successful addition that fits the vibe), and due to maturity and progression the band as a whole shows on this instrumental track. Another great track is a 10-minute album closer “Biological Masterpiece”, where the trio displays and offers a recap of all their skills maxed out. Furthermore, Changelings features a powerful and dynamic sounding production, which suits the material well. All instruments and vocals are to be heard clearly in the mix.
On Changelings the trio clearly show the respect and worship some of the genre giants, while still maintaining their own identity. It is as an intense, euphoric and memorable listening experience that rewards multiple spins. Changelings is definitely well worth getting excited for and diving into. It’s an inspiring and experimental piece of technical and progressive thrash metal of the highest order! Especially recommended for fans of Coroner, Voivod, Kreator, Atheist, Artillery, Flotsam and Jetsam, Cynic, Watchtower etc. For more information visit label’s bandcamp or facebook and learn more on this sophomore seven-tracker from Species.
