RVH Project - Land of the Damned - 70%

The first review of the new year is the RVH Project from The Netherlands. RVH Project was conceived in 2021 as the solo project of Dutch multi-instrumentalist Rick Van Heuzen (vocals, bass, backing vocals…). The solo project later became a trio, following the inclusion of Orion Roos (guitars & backing vocals) and Gerry de Graaf (drums).

Land of the Damned is trio’ sophomore full-length consisting of following ten tracks:

1. Land of the Damned
2. Voices
3. Butterfly
4. Open Your Eyes
5. Heads are Gonna Roll (Judgement Day)
6. Marilyn’s Here
7. Inject the Venom
8. Coming Home
9. The First Time
10. Dance

Noteworthy is the fact that Land of the Damned features another two guests musicians; Hans Voerman (keyboards) and Martin Verdonk (percussion). From the opening self-titled “Land of the Damned” the album is reminiscent of their earlier work which applies; a blend of the power of late ’70s and ’80s rock with a modern and hard-hitting edge. Thus, Land of the Damned is filled with some high-energy riffs, melodic hooks and emotionally charged songwriting.

Some of the record’s highlights include most of the songs from the first half of the album, especially catchy tracks like the opening “Land of the Damned”, then “Voices” due to the drumming playing a central role here, along with some delicious bluesy rock ‘n’ roll riffing. Meanwhile, a track like “Coming Home”, from the second part of the album, has some catchy tunes and a general sense of good musicianship.

The only con/single disadvantage in my humble opinion is the production part, as I feel it needs a more punch in production to match the aforementioned strong songwriting. As it is now, it appears too bland, lacks a bit flavor, excitement and character. Still, one can hear a progression and growth within the formation, and as such a major step forward from their 2022 debut, Enter the Machines – being heavier and offering very good musicianship.

With some room for growth and improvement in production and vocal power, Land of the Damned is still a solid & enjoyable album – recommended album for lovers of classic rock and eighties music in general.
