    Peasant God - Null - 65%

Null is my first encounter with a doom/industrial/sludge band going under the moniker of Peasant God. The band (featuring members of Dead Existence, Grave Lines, Walking Corpse etc.) hails from Gothenburg, Sweden. Since its formation it was comprised of; F. Rojas (vocals, guitars, and programming) and Stgr’n M (vocals & bass). Null is their 2017 six-tracker release, now in 2026 available and re-released on a cassette by Visceral Circuitry Records.

What we can hear on Null are six tracks of a nice and an engrossing noisy mix of slow sludge, intense industrial, and depressed doom metal, even with few subtle psychedelic/off-kilter effects, mainly in the spirit of old Godflesh, early-Pitchshifter, Body Void, Ilon Lapset etc. Thus, the overall style is pretty raw and menacing, featuring low-tuned guitar and bass, deep growls, and clinical and crushing pounding drum beatsl and with an intense and clinical sonic battering. The lyrical themes are pretty limited to Nihilism, which is really a core theme present in their music and branding so far in their career. The atmosphere is hard to describe as one can hear some noisy and weird industrial elements, yet still dense and oppressive while maintaining a driving intensity.

Thanks to the experience of its members, Null is not just another typical demo release, and I find it very effective and coherent, while engrossing all tracks that combine slow, melodic sludge with harsh noise. Two stand-out tracks for me are actually the two closing songs, namely β€œLast Gasp”, being the longest song here, but still with a driving and engrossing intensity, featuring mesmeric/hypnotic bass & guitar tones and tempo. Closing with the self-titled track β€œNull”, Peasant God ends this demo on a high note with an inspiring, noisy yet weird demo closure.

Black tape with sticker, pro color cover is limited to 100 copies only, so check it out if you like old school doom/ sludge metal.
