Lille, France is deeply defined by its medieval past, industrial heritage, and modern, vibrant arts scene. Whether you are uncovering the secret histories of its cobbled streets, making memories at local hotspots, or diving into its rich local music culture, Lille offers a deeply immersive experience. Today, the city is widely recognized for its thriving musical landscape. One of the standout projects emerging from this scene is Past And Secrets—a primarily instrumental journey through a melancholic and airy universe.
Past And Secrets is an atmospheric progressive metal and djent one-man project by French guitarist and composer Yohan Delasalle. Memories is his debut offering: a five-track EP with an 18-minute runtime that delivers a captivating blend of ambient and progressive metal. The record balances heavy, catchy riffs with soaring, emotive guitar solos. Furthermore, the music stands out for its ethereal, spacious synths, and lush ambient textures.
The EP excels as an auditory narrative. Each of the five tracks feels like stepping into a personal memory, blending heavy punches with airy, floating soundscapes. While all the songs fit together to form a cohesive concept story, my personal favorite is “BoRn.” As the heaviest track on the record, it delivers a masterclass in atmospheric and polyrhythmic metal. This track perfectly marries aggressive, low-end djent grooves and bass drops with reflective, cinematic emotion.
Though Memories lacks lyrical content, the music remains highly engaging by creating a sharp contrast between technical djent riffs and quiet, ambient interludes. It possesses an atmospheric depth filled with haunting melodies. I especially love how the project evokes a sense of nostalgia and airy expansiveness, fitting perfectly with the EP’s title.
The cover art for Memories visually captures the project’s thematic focus on nostalgia, introspective journeys, and emotional duality. The center of the artwork features a prominent silhouette transitioning through a doorway, evoking the threshold of memory retrieval.
Ultimately, Memories is a highly rewarding listen for fans of introspective, guitar-driven music. It serves as an open invitation to self-reflection, allowing listeners to get completely lost in the resulting emotions.
