Label: Me Saco Un Ojo Records/Darkness Shall Rise Productions / Release date: 23rd May 2025
After a decade of preparation, a Wisconsin-based trio, Ossuary finally released their debut album Abhorrent Worship. It comes as a follow-up to their first two demo releases and an EP. This six-tracker record, released through Me Saco Un Ojo Records (vinyl) and Darkness Shall Rise Productions (CD and cassette), contains following songs.
Tracklist:
01. Volitional Entropy
02. Inborn Scourge Unbound
03. Forsaken Offerings (To The Doomed Spirit)
04. Instinctual Prostration
05. The Undrownable Howl Of Evil
06. The Barren Lamentation
Abhorrent Worship is mostly a slow-to-mid-paced record, filled with monolithic and chugging riffs, where the band has been focusing on crushing and deliberate grooves rather than blistering speed, that is very common in almost any moden death metal release. It helps creating a trudging and monolithic feel. Monstrous, demonic and growling gnarly vocals (incl. some black metal-esque shrieks), matched with thunderous drums and thick bass, creates a solid fundation for their sound. The overall atmosphere is suffocating, menacing, dense and cavernous.
My favourite track from Abhorrent Worship would be the fourth track called “Instinctual Prostration”, due to superb riffing and groovy nature, reminiscent of the likes of Down and Crowbar. Another strong offering is the album’s finale named “Barren Lamentation”, which begins with a slow-building, gloomy drone, and eventually develops into more complex, heavy and crushing doom riff-monster, that pulls the record nicely over the finish line.
As depicted above, the music on this 37-minutes long album is captivating and engaging, but it tends to get a bit repetitive and trivial when all six tracks are cut from exactly the same (often simple) recipe.
Conclusion; considered the fact that Abhorrent Worship is band’s debut, I think it’s an exceptionally strong and impressive album, showing mature songwriting, something unusual for band’s releasing their debut full-length. Thus, Abhorrent Worship is a highly-recommended for fans of an old-school death and doom metal and the likes of Bolt Thrower, Incantation, Grave Infestation, Phrenelith, and the above-mentioned Crowbar and Down.
So, if you’re lookin’ for something heavy, dark and atmospheric, delivering a crushing, hate-filled sonic journey that sticks with the listener, look no further than to their bandcamp where you can read more details on this solid listening experience.
