Released through Via Nocturna, an independent label from Poland, Fabulae is debut full-length from Polish trio under the moniker of Nasciturus. All of the three band members have a multiple roles in the band; Wojciech Bosek (bass and vocals), Rafał “Czarnuch” Chruścicki (drums and vocals) and Marcin “Martens” Miziołek (guitars and vocals).

While being labeled as black metal, Fabulae is unmistakably experimental seven-tracker record, where they mix obvious black metal with instrumental noise, punk, death, doom, thrash and folk metal. Lyrically Fabulae draws inspiration from the myths and legends of their homeland, Poland. In other words; they don’t hide their fascination with their region, its culture, history and above all its legends and fairy tales.

Tracklist:

01. Pomirki
02. Ogniem uzdrowion
03. Potrójnie przez ziemie wypluty
04. O Czudca powstaniu
05. Pieklisko we Wróblowej
06. Silva Populo
07. Pokuta

All four musicians posses strong technical skills, demonstrating proficiency in its complex musicianship. These four gentlemen largely succeed in creating an exciting experiment containing numerous unexpected twists and inclusion of various ‘extreme’ influences. It resulted in an album that is experimental, eccentric and at times difficult to grasp. Thus, it requires at least a couple of spins to give pivotal/important nuances which makes this a quite interesting and well-crafted release.

My own highlights of the entire album are prominent screaming and insane vocals, catchy rhythms including intense riffs, gunshot drums and monstrous/powerful bass lines. The atmosphere is raw and exhilarating, and the whole album feels as a brutal sonic experience stimulating all your senses. Fabulae creates a dense, feverish, and nightmarish soundscape, which makes it listenable and approachable album after all.

My two personal favourites from Fabulae are; the opening unmistakably experimental song “Pomirki”, mainly due to the wild soloing toward the end of the song, and a piece like “Potrójnie przez ziemie wypluty” – which perfectly reveals all the key things in their sound, as illustrated in a previous part.

The guys just want you to listen to Fabulae, which they’re very proud of, where you at least for a momet will feel the atmosphere of the 19th century in Polish village of Podkarpacie. This close to 41-minutes long record will mostly appeal to fans of Venom, Emperor, Graveyard, Sigh, Behemoth, Alcest, Infernal War, Arkona etc.
