Adrift is the nine-track, third full-length studio album by Czech progressive death metal masters Mindwork, released on August 27, 2026. Marking their first major LP release since 2012’s Eterea, the current lineup is comprised of Martin Schuster (vocals, piano, guitars), Jiří Rambousek (guitars), Dominik Vozobule (bass), and Filip Kittnar (drums). The record also features spectacular guest contributions, most notably Martin Plachý, who delivers searing saxophone leads on key tracks. Conceptually, Adrift is a deeply poignant work exploring the devastating realities of Alzheimer’s disease, mapping out a heartbreaking journey of memory loss, identity dissolution, and psychological fragmentation.

Clocking in at approximately 41 minutes, Adrift thrives on complex compositions layered with rich progressive textures. The band effortlessly blends the technical nature of death metal with elements of jazz, 1970s progressive synthesizers, and atmospheric, sci-fi soundscapes. The individual performance throughout the record is executed at the highest level: Filip Kittnar’s drumming is brilliantly unpredictable, fluidly shifting through constant changes while Dominik Vozobule provides prominent, intricate bass counterpoints. The guitars – soothing clean passages are masterfully juxtaposed against harsh, staccato riffs, keeping the fretwork consistently engaging and unpredictable. Plachý’s expressive saxophone work adds a vibrant, late-night jazz-fusion layer to the heavy framework, while Martin Schuster’s harsh, aggressive growls drive the band’s signature extreme metal edge.

Because the band firmly labels itself as progressive death metal, some listeners may notice a slight lack of traditional, old-school death metal aggression in both the vocal delivery and overall instrumental weight. The focus here leans heavily toward cerebral, progressive atmospheres rather than raw, blistering fury.

If I had to select the absolute highlights of this emotional journey, they would be:
1. “Adrift”: The opening title track begins with a slow-building, clean guitar instrumental intro backed by subtle cymbals. It masterfully builds tension before flowing seamlessly into the heart of the album.
2. “The Great Deception of Mind”: A massive, six-minute centerpiece featuring spacey riffs, a complex rhythm structure, and a brilliant jazz-fusion saxophone solo by Plachý (listen below).
3. “A Moment of Clarity”: A more direct, high-energy progressive metal track that perfectly showcases the tighter, punchier side of the band’s songwriting.

The production of the album feels dense, pristine, and remarkably cold. At times, this hyper-clean, modern mix makes the music feel overly technical and slightly sterile, occasionally overshadowing the raw emotional weight of the concept. Visually, the abstract cover artwork created by artist Miloš Kotek beautifully echoes the theme. Its fragmented style perfectly mirrors the unraveling of human consciousness, fading memory pathways, and the terrifying sensation of drifting away from reality as the anchor of the mind dissolves.

Adrift is a sophisticated, highly technical return from a band that has been quiet for far too long. It is highly recommended for fans of Cynic, Rivers of Nihil, Opeth, Persefone, Obscura, and Haken. You can stream or purchase the album directly via the official Mindwork Bandcamp page.
