If I were to describe Malepeste using a single word or phrase, I would probably say ‘ever-evolving’.

The French Black Metal quintet started as a trio fifteen years ago as a very pagan, bare-bones experience. As they grew in number, they likewise grew in complexity, something that was evident both as a more ritualistic performance when playing live (complete with long, flowing robes, a stark contrast to the tattered they wore prior) as well as through a more intensely gritty abuse of instruments, vocals and, indeed, the audience.

This evolution has taken place over one and a half decade, which has so far produced one Demo, two Split-albums and, as of next month, three Full-length records; The last of these set to be called Ex Nihilo.

Six tracks. Forty-some minutes. Traditionally-inspired ritualistic Black Metal, not unlike early Babushka or even Dordeduh. This would probably the both the shortest way for me to describe the record, as well as doubling as the highest praise that I can give it, being a big fan of the former and a massive fan of the latter. But were I to press myself a bit for a bit more information (which I intend to), I suppose it would be only prudent to add that Malepeste is one of those technical bands that does everything right and by the book; You read the proverbial tin (genre, country and themes) and you know exactly what you are in for. No surprises, no twists – Just sheer, raw French Black Metal in its undiluted form, to which I am always inclined.

So far, the single Stupor can be found online (I have linked it below) and in my opinion it is a perfect near-five minutes long time capsule of what Malepeste have developed into a present while at the same time singing (well, growling and screaming) promises for the future.
