Johan Steensland – Duality

Johan Steensland is a Swedish composer, educator, singer and guitarist best known for his contributions to the progressive rock scene, but his work also includes progressive pop and soul-fusion. Duality is a title for his latest offering, a carefully constructed progressive rock album that clearly shows Steensland’s clear musical skill and ambition.

Duality has been (self)released in the autumn of 2025, and distributed/promoted by Bad Dog Promotions. This lengthy record (spanning over an hour) consists of twelve tracks and is split into ‘Act 1- Confusion’, and ‘Act 2 – Attraction’. In other words; Duality is a progressive rock-opera, telling a cohesive and linear story, about a fiction writer, Eddie (voiced by Steensland) who suffers from amnesia, and Lydia, the head nurse at the hospital where Eddie wakes up. It features two male/female protagonists, and corresponding elaborated vocal arrangements expectedly, great ambience to experience.

Duality is a nicely made and consistent and coherent album containing many enjoyable compositions, of which my favorite is the album’ first single from my new album Duality; the track called “Walking in a Straight Line” (watch below). This partcilar song also serves as the opening number from ‘Act 2 – Attraction’. Furthermore, “Walking in a Straight Line” somehow captures the core identity of the album, mainly by balancing experimental progressive arrangements with accessible, pop-tinged hooks. Another of my favorites is positioned as the fifth track on the album, one called “A Perfect Lie”. This track is pretty similar to the aforementioned “Walking in a Straight Line”, as they both serve as the melodic anchors on the album. It offers emotional warmth and a serves as a major emotional and musical peak within the rock opera’s first half. Ultimately, the 10-minute closing epic and beautifully crafted album’ appropriate grand finale “Here and Now”, has this highly theatrical setting/structure, a standout flute work, and an intense climax of dueling vocals and shredding guitars.

The overall sonic landscape on Duality heavily relies on rich, dense textures, and carried by Johan Steensland leading vocals, alongside singer Aleena Gibson, in order to drive the emotional narrative. Production is pristine, pure, polished, clean, precise and accessible, with mathematically precise instrument separation and minimal raw distortion. The album cover/artwork, created by artist Peter Lazar, expertly depicts the visual relationship between Eddie and the head nurse Lydia, framing the rock-opera’s theatrical theme.

As has been demonstrated Duality as a whole features a rich sonic variety, with numerous instrumental backdrop including classical piano, fretless bass, rustic flutes, and a vintage ’80s keyboard mix. Fans who enjoy introspective, slow-burning, impressive and well-crafted/carefully constructed progressive rock, and the likes of Genesis, Toto, Kaipa, Saga and Marillion, will likely appreciate Duality.
