Il Mondo Aldilà is the sophomore full-length album by the Italian extreme metal project Insania.11. Originally formed in Varese, Lombardy, Italy, in 1989 under the moniker Insania (born from the merger of the bands Incubo and Res), the group used the original name until 1997 before reforming and rebranding as Insania.11 in 2011. The core lineup consists of the duo Ethrum (guitars) and Samaang (vocals, bass, guitars, synthesizers, and drum programming).
The new album serves as the follow-up to the project’s highly acclaimed 2020 debut, L’Orrore. It contains 12 tracks that portray a dystopian universe and the overarching concept of “Il Mondo Aldilà.” Essentially, the record depicts a society where technological progress has imposed a rigid discipline upon humanity, reducing human beings to a state of alienating servitude. The story unfolds through the eyes of a spiritual movement born within this surreal reality; by utilizing psychedelic drugs, the followers of this subversive cult forcefully open the boundaries between the physical world and the astral plane.
Across this 12-track epic, the band does not just play songs—they build a sprawling, dark universe where every riff and time signature shift serves the narrative arc. The duo masterfully blends intense death metal with thrash metal dynamics, while threading in progressive and black metal elements. The instrumentation and performance shine through several key pillars:
– The vocals: Samaang delivers a powerful performance dominated by an aggressive thrash-style rasp, beautifully paired with sparse, low guttural death metal growls.
– The drums: although the percussion is programmed, the arrangements provide an exceptionally precise, unwavering, and clinical foundation for the music.
– The bass: the bass guitar is tracked physically to counter the synthetic nature of the programmed drums. It anchors the dark, apocalyptic atmosphere of standout tracks like “Abyssus” (listen below) and “Ignite.”
The record carries a complex, leaden, and dark atmosphere perfectly tailored to its dystopian lyrical themes. The album art breaks away from traditional high-fantasy metal themes, opting instead for a haunting, minimalist aesthetic. The central focal point of the artwork is a stylized, surreal black-and-white illustration of a skull covered in numerous eyes. This unsettling design mirrors the concept album’s thematic journey through its 12 chapters, representing the dimensions of the afterlife.
In summary, Il Mondo Aldilà is a masterclass in extreme metal alchemy, seamlessly fusing the grim atmosphere of black metal and the crushing weight of death metal with the sheer kinetic energy of thrash. Insania.11 does not just jump between styles; they weaponize the whiplash speed of thrash and the technicality of progressive metal to create an entirely cohesive sonic identity.
This highly ambitious concept album is not an easy listen and demands full attention from the audience. It comes highly recommended for worshippers of diverse, technical acts such as Death, Coroner, Psycroptic, Sadus, Sadist, Necrophagist, Horrid, and Necrophobic.
Il Mondo Aldilà is available on all major digital streaming platforms, while limited physical copies can be purchased directly on their official Bandcamp page.
