I do believe to have mentioned (on numerous occasions) that I have a penchant for French Black Metal bands; The more French the band is, the better one could almost argue. That is probably why Bato was kind enough to provide me with the newest full-length release from the quartet Insane Vesper. It is entitled Layil (which is Old Testament Hebrew for ‘Night’, as far as I have been able to gather), and marks a new era for the band in the form of a new drummer and, more noticeably perhaps, a new lead singer. Overall Layil is Insane Vesper’s second full album released in fourteen years: Despite that the sheer talent and considerable ambition of the band members still shine through. Layil contains six tracks and has a running total on almost forty-two minutes – Pretty decent for an album, both in term of length of the tracks and the complete length of the album. Musically the band seem to share the same desire as several of their kinsmen, which is to create, perform and play a modern, strong, consistent (and very aggressive) type of Black Metal. This works exceptionally well, with the more than a decade long period of experience the band shares clearly shining through. The first release single from the album is entitled ”Seed of Inanna”, and I believe it to be an great example of what this album has to offer: It is powerful, distorted, and violently aggressive. Precisely the way it should be, and therefore an excellent choice by the band. And, since curiously enough the album does not contain a track that bears the albums name (Layil), then perhaps this means that ”Seed of Inanna” will end up taking the place as the title track? But I digress.

Recommened for fans of Vehemence, Regarde Les Hommes Tomber and Malevolentia.
