Hersir – Hateful Draugar From The Underground - 65%

Hersir is a Swedish Black Metal quartet, one that prides itself of being ‘genuine and without any infantile pretence – In this case translated into being a band without any gimmick of any sort or, all content and no show. All of which I consider very interesting statements to make so naturally I was on board nearly from the get-go.

I practice, this means that Hersir is a somewhat simplified version of modern Black Metal without all the bells and whistles such as added violins or voice-overs; Only the bare minimum of instruments, as made the genre infamous in the first place. This callback to their roots also extend to the lyrical themes present throughout Hateful Draugar From The Underground, digging deep into their cultural backgrounds rich lore – As such, we are presented with a ten tracks long Full-length album singing the praise of old Norse mythology and Paganism alike while at the same time serving as a condemnation of the Abrahamic religions which has traditionally also been associated with this particular genre. And how does this approach serve the band? Surprisingly well as it turns out.

If not for the particularly cleaner mixing, Hersirs first foray into a full record could easily have been mistaken for a record three decades older (meaning that it would even predate the foundation of the band back in 2016), being both relentless, heavily distorted and riddled with haunted yet controlled growls. Not so much a love letter to the genre and era as much as a forceful rejuvenation of it by four strong-willed individuals who have so far proven their worth across three Demos.

All in all, nearly fifty minutes of pure, as-promised Black Metal the way only Scandinavia can deliver. And more than recommended for any fans of the genre and bands such as Behexen.

Below can be found their album to be played in full, for any who are so inclined.
