Another black metal review and yet one more Polish band releasing their metrial on their fellow Polish label, Godz Ov War Productions! Put differently; there’s nothing to dislike unless you really hate black metal. Garota is a relatively young ensemble featuring following three members; Asbiel (vocals & guitars), Goatcraft (bass) and Witchfucker (drums). The band was formed during the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020 in the town of Szczecin. Prior to forming this band, they were all involved in other Polish bands. I think one can clearly hear that on their sophomore seven-tracker full-length entitled Z mieczem na gwiazdy… (translate to With a sword to the stars…).
Tracklist:
1. Z mieczem na gwiazdy cz.
2. Posiądę Cię jak żywą
3. Hades już czeka
4. Matka
5. Z grzechu obmyci
6. Per mortem ad astra
7. Z mieczem na gwiazdy cz.
Z mieczem na gwiazdy… contains seven tracks of music you can easily guess by taking a look at artwork and logo. Music itself is not too complex, as more or less everything is based on few chords, with few scorching riffs & cold tremolos, and some uncomplicated drumming, yet the album has many fine moments. The first noticeable thing are the song titles and the lyrical content, which are all in their native Polish. Thanks to the characteristically rough vocals, the lyrics are understandable, and the fact that they’re in Polish is another plus. As far as I’m informed Garota, in their lyrics, explore a more about philosophical aspects of death, with lyrics that are unlike the instruments, a bit more complex and quite deep. To say at least, the lyrical side harmonizes with the musical and artistic path the band is following.
Apart from the chords and steady drumming, one can hear some screechy and growling vocals and surprisingly good bass lines with enough bass presence in the mix. In other words; the bass provides the crucial low-end foundation and anchors the rhythm, acting as the bridge between the drums and guitars.
I liked band’s 2022 debut Czarne Wizje (translate to Black Visions), and this sophomore follow-up continues their good streak. I think everyone who appreciate the speed and aggression from thrash metal mixed with bleak and desperate atmosphere & epic side of black metal, should not hesitate to buy it, because it won’t be wasted money!
