Ancient Greece echoes down the halls of time, reverberating in the 2020s. Heavy rock music is alive and well in the Hellenistic world. The last few years the land of Alexander the Great is conquering something new, the heavy rock scene. Forget the rehashed British Invasion, move toward the golden isles of Greece. A land with so much history is putting out some of the best rock n roll these days.
The first track, “Burning Roads” puts out an 80s Film soundtrack vibe. A solid opening for a ten-song set. A bass heavy rocker. A no frills heavy rock song reminiscent of Fu Manchu and Fastway. “The Open the Wound” the third track is an amalgam. A chameleon song. Wavers from post punk to Tool-esque dirge. Add a splash of Seattle’s best grunge and you have a potent modern day sonic Greek fire. A song to add to your latest play list.
“The Core Machine” hits a mammoth rock n roll grove, distortion in just the right places. Got a big dose of psychedelic Monster Magnet bridge section smashed in a post punk haze chorus. A rocker, might be a track to add to the rotation for your summer playlist. Punchy and heavy, the song is tight, straight-through the 4:19 track.
“I Don’t Believe” is punk rock. The intro is dead on mean 80s styled punk anger. Stain a layer of amplified fuzzed effects and you just got introduced to a new song style, stoner/punk. This one’s going on a new playlist soon. At just under 3 minutes the song qualifies as a punk odyssey.
There are some moments on the full album that are solid studio tracks. For a rock band to put out four songs that belong on your hard rock jams playlist. Playing the album, straight through several occasions, influences pop out at you, bringing the music into focus. Whatever you were doing is secondary. A sign of an album of the month caliber contender. I hear Tool and Black Sabbath in the same song. Motörhead and NYHC in another. The trio impress. A deeper dive into their modest catalog, their songwriting is sound. Above grade without having to think about it. Their EP, Into the Desert is a tight 4 song lesson in desert rock, halfway around the world. Someone needs to promote them on summer rock festivals this year.
Can you tell I like this band?
On the trio’s bandcamp page, they describe their sound, “Fuzzing Nation delivers a raw, unpolished sound with massive grooves and fiery energy…”. An accurate statement. The trio formed in 2022. In the short 3+ years, they put out two EPs, and their latest, a full-length album.
Taking my sweet time, playing Mothertruck and their previous EP dozens of times. Their songs keep delivering. A must happen, get these Greek rockers out to the Mojave desert pronto, to play some gigs on a dune under a starry mild desert night. When that happens I intend on being there.
Outro – headphones on, plug in, press play and rock on.
