Label: AOP Records / Release date: 2nd January 2026
Ellende (the band’s name can be translated as ‘being in exile’, but also as ‘miserable’) is a post black metal band based out of Austria. Founded thirteen years ago by the multi-instrumentalist L.G. in Graz, Ellende began its journey with debut EP RΓΌckzug in die Innerlichkeit. Over the years, Ellende released six full-length albums and three EPs. It bring us to the beginning of 2026 and the release of their sixth studio album entitled Zerfall. It consists of eleven tracks, including two bonus tracks, a cover of Jeremy Soule βSecundaβ and Verborgenes inneres Leidenβ as another bonus track.
Zerfall, released on AOP Records, is still firmly rooted in the atmospheric black metal genre, while incorporating classical instrumentation such as strings and grand piano. One can safely say that Zerfall is a polished blend of melancholy, despair and post (black) metal that balances harsh blast beats with acoustic elements. The overall sound continues the bandβs signature style of blending high-tempo aggression with introspective, piano or violin-driven passages. Most of the time, almost an hour long journey, the vocals are operatic and cinematic, but also painful, cold and delivered with an emotional depth. Lyrically, the album effectively conveys themes of decay and loss, but also ‘…portrays the state of being shattered into fragments, and the slow, painful process of rebuilding oneself; a confrontation with the void and ultimately a triumph over it’.
Thus, the whole material is coherent, mature and emotionally intense. It’s clear that the band/project has matured with each new opus, and Zerfall is no exception. Actually, I find it a more refined and focused effort than previous works by Ellende. The cinematic and haunting atmosphere is noted for its bleak cold beauty, offering a mix of post-rock and atmospheric black metal.
Key two tracks in my opinion are; a high-intensity track, βZeitenwelde Teil IIβ due to its genuine 80s guitar solo combined with a ‘naked black metal aggression’ found in earlier Ellende works. It makes this track the strongest and bravest track the Austrian act have yet made. Second stand-out song is the emotional piece named βReiseβ, featuring some delicate melodies and harsh, screaming and painful vocals.
I would like to leave a few words about the album artwork too – the surrealist painting captures the spirit of the album perfectly, both through the facial expression, as well as the spider (?!) that seems escaping through a wound on women’s forehead.
Closing thoughts; the albumβs intense themes, and due to lacking the raw edge of traditional black metal, may provoke polarized reactions among fans, but I view Zerfall as a strong contender for top atmospheric black metal releases of 2026. It’s still available over at bandcamp, but if you just want a pre-listen before ordering your physical copy, you can watch the official music video for the self-titled track βZerfallβ. Zerfall is recommended for fans of the genre and bands like Harakiri for the Sky, Karg, Austere, Woods of Desolation, Uada, Drudkh etc.
