Brethren Of Sadness is a fairly new band, one that seems to have its roots sometime early this year. In that time the two founding members (multi-instrumentalist Anthony Copertino Jr. and vocalist John Suffering) have taken them upon themselves to fuse into existance a new take on the Funeral Doom genre; One that lends even heavier from its Black Metal roots.

So far the end result (but knowing the artists involved very likely not their Magnum Opus) is a five-track record running roughly thirty-nine minutes entitled Eulogy Beneath Eternal Shadows.

Straight off the bat it is clear that this is a Blackened Funeral Doom Metal release (something the band members themselves readily admits to as well) – John Suffering in particular is an individual I originally came across as a Funeral Doom performer and, as such is very experienced within said genre as well. Not to mentioned dedicated to doing it proper justice And so far, Eulogy Beneath Eternal Shadows live up to my expectations.

The music is slow and menacing, deliberately never rising above a crawl. Instruments kept simple, ever so slightly off-key. Unnerving. Unsettling. Every last approach I have always loved about Who Dies In Siberian Slush now made manifest in yet another band. And I am here for it. As for the Blackened influences – The haunting use of organ-coded keyboards used as intros on tracks such as ”Crushed By Shadows” are the ones that sprang the most to mind for me. Definitely a slight tweak to the formula, but thankfully nowhere near enough to turn the album into something completely different. As I often ramble on about, I like to keep my genres more or less divided – Albeit with some caveats to exceptions. And Brethren Of Shadows fit into that niche nicely.
All in all this is a band I will be keeping an eye on, and recommend to fans of the genre.
