Hailing from Dokkum in Friesland, Netherlands, Atmoran is an exciting thrash metal force comprised of Wiebe van Kammen (bass), Max van der Meij (drums), Klaas Haaksma (guitar), and Frank van der Ploeg (vocals). We Fight Back! is this Dutch quartet’s debut full-length album, released on May 4, 2026, as a joint cooperation between Big Bad Wolf Records and Headbangers Records.

Despite their young age, these musicians handle their instruments with superb skill. The record features sharp, driving guitar work by Klaas Haaksma, a clear, thick bass foundation by Wiebe van Kammen, and varied, energetic drumming from Max van der Meij. When you layer in the dynamic vocal delivery of Frank van der Ploeg—who seamlessly alternates between standard thrash metal shouts and harsh, piercing screams—you get a fantastic blueprint for modern thrash.

The concise duration of the tracks serves as a significant benefit. Averaging approximately four minutes each, no individual song feels unnecessarily prolonged. The production is incredibly tight, boasting heavy guitars that completely avoid muddiness, alongside an audible bass track and punchy drums. Even more importantly, the record displays solid, mature, and disciplined songwriting throughout.

If I had to pick the absolute highlights of the record, they would be:

  • “The Cross”: A blistering, highly energetic album opener designed specifically to ignite circle pits.
  • “Shadows”: A mid-album track featuring a slightly darker vibe and atmosphere, paired with an evil groove and an intense vocal delivery.
  • “We Fight Back!”: The closing title track serves as an energetic finale that perfectly anchors the album’s core sound of sharp riffing and heavy groove.

The “insane” cover art for We Fight Back!, created by illustrator Thomas Pinheiro, features a design meticulously crafted to match the record’s heavy, aggressive musical style. It leans deeply into classic, old-school thrash aesthetics, providing an excellent visual companion to the music.

In conclusion, while it does not reinvent the thrash wheel, the 9-track We Fight Back! is a remarkably mature and hard-hitting debut. It delivers an aggressive blend of modern thrash, groove metal, and metalcore influences, drawing favorable comparisons to scene giants like Exodus, Testament, Death Angel, Toxic Holocaust, Gojira, Lamb of God, and Pantera. Additionally, their sound contains subtle elements of blackened thrash and Gothenburg-style melodic death metal.

We Fight Back! comes highly recommended for fans of aggressive, modern thrash with a strong groove/death component. Atmoran is a band worth keeping a close eye on.
