In this day and age where it seems to be getting more and more difficult to stand out and be significantly noteworthy and remarkable, there is something to be said for keeping your heard down, doing what you do best and doing it well. No unnecessary bells and whistles nor overarching, genre-spanning gimmicks. Just pure, unadulterated, raw aggression. And on that note, enter stage Polish Black Metal quartet Angrrsth.
Having been around for seven years at time of writing, the band has in that span of time released one EP, one Split album and two Full-length releases – All of which brimming with conceptual anger, hatred and just good old-fashioned evil. This is also the case on their newest release Zludnia, which is, ironically, Polish for ‘Illusion’. Illusion or not however, the sheer menace present throughout their performance, ranging from the repentless drums across the riffing guitars and booming bass lines all the way onto the forefront of the deep, anger-fueled growls of the lead singer.
Does the band bring anything innovative to the table? No. Have they changed with the times to follow the current trends of their genre? Arguably, also no. What they have managed to do is take everything I like about the Polish Black Metal scene (the simplistic brutality suffused through the Second Wave Black Metal mold) and cranked it up to eleven. And that, paradoxically enough, is memorable enough for me to put this seven-tracks long album back on top of my ‘to spin’ pile again and again.
Forty Minutes of pure recommendations for any fans of Panzerfaust, Urfaust and Patriarkh.
