The influential Canadian alternative metal quartet Kittie marked their return in 2021 after a lengthy hiatus. Since then, they have released their first new album in 13 years—2024’s Fire. While labeling Kittie an alternative metal band is accurate, their sound draws inspiration from grunge, thrash metal, punk, groove metal, and more.
These days, the band consists of two original members, with guitarist Tara McLeod and bassist Ivana “Ivy” Jenkins joining in 2005 and 2007, respectively.
At Copenhell, they played the third stage—an appropriate choice—and under sunny skies (though a bit too windy), the setting promised a great day in the company of the Canadian ladies.
The band opened ferociously with the title track from their latest album, followed by another post-hiatus song—the title track from their 2011 album I’ve Failed You. However, from that point, things started to go slightly downhill. Their performance came across as one of those “just another day at the office” shows. Crowd interaction was minimal and, when it did occur, felt scripted—as if they were just ticking boxes.
Still, singer/guitarist Morgan Lander’s charisma and attitude shone through, which helped carry the performance to some extent. Her growls remain powerful, and drummer Mercedes Lander’s backing vocals were equally solid.
Toward the end, the band delivered an updated version of “Brackish,” which worked very well, and closed with “We Are the Lamb,” a track that showcased some of the nuanced depth present in Kittie’s music.
Kittie came and went without leaving a lasting mark on Copenhell.
