Following an utterly blistering performance by Walls of Jericho on the same stage, Bay Area thrash metal legends Exodus took on the challenge. Fresh off a recent reunion with vocalist Rob Dukes just a few months ago, the band is currently working on a new album and in the meantime they are getting into the gear by playing some shows in Europe this summer.
They hit the stage to the iconic notes of Queen’s “We Will Rock You”—a risky move, but they somehow made it work.
“Bonded by Blood” was a bit messy to start with, but everything locked into place when they tore into “Piranha”, which felt like it came from a whole other level. From that point forward, there was no looking back.
It’s honestly impressive to witness the sheer energy this band brings after four decades of recording and touring. With Dukes back on vocals, Exodus feels re-energized. While he may not be in peak physical shape these days, his stage presence is still intense and commanding. That said, he might want to stop jumping off the drum riser—during “Brain Dead”, he nearly took a fall.
Aside from Tom Hunting, who was somewhat buried behind his massive drum kit, the rest of the band made a strong effort to connect with the crowd, maintaining eye contact throughout the set. This dynamic push-pull with the audience kept the energy high. It’s especially impressive to see Gary Holt so engaged—constantly locking eyes with fans and clearly focused on the people in front of him. After more than 40 years in Exodus and over a decade with Slayer, the hunger and passion in his performance and stage presence are still palpable. And that signature, squealing guitar tone of his is always a thrill to hear live.
At 60, Hunting’s drumming remains outstanding—and is the glue holding this tight unit together. And tight they most certainly do play.
“We are Exodus from the Bay Area, and we’re here to teach you a lesson,” Dukes declared before launching into “A Lesson in Violence”, which seamlessly transitioned into “War Is My Shepherd”. They wrapped up with “The Toxic Waltz” and “Strike of the Beast”, perfectly closing out what truly was a masterclass in thrash metal.
