Napalm Records/Target, 5th November 2007
Svartsot is another strong band from the ever flourishing Danish metal scene. Signed to the record company Napalm Records, which are really great in spotting the best up-coming bands, the six piece is ready with the release of their long anticipated debut album Ravnenes Saga.
This six piece Danish unit have started originally as a black metal combo but soon after changed their style into what they are playing today; folk metal. And they are doing it very good! The music is very ‘Scandinavian’ with melo death instruments, heavy guitar riffing, deep and slow vocals and whipping drumming. There are even some mandolin parts, whistles and bodhran. The most original thing is that this band sings all their songs in their native Danish, which is very similar to Norwegian, so if you’re a fan of this kind, Svartsot’ Ravnenes Saga is the perfect choice for you.
The lyrical contest is much about typical Viking themes such as heroic battles, feasts and a huge dose of mystery to it all. This album contains a few ‘soon to become’ hymns for the Folk metal’s next generation of worshipers. This debut release from Svartsot is an album every (folk) metal fan will enjoy, so did I.
