A smashing and incredibly captivating cover somewhat belies what you will hear when you put on the album Mortal Aspirations. The genre has been hard to find and searching the net I was presented with a plethora of possible genres, such as doom, depressing metal, dark.. and well, you get the picture. The first time I listened it through I had not researched the album or the artist and was taken aback as it seemed very, very special. Not inherently bad, no, but special in the sense that I could not see myself listening to it for long - wondering if I would even make it through the album at all.
Made it through I did and I am glad that I did. While it does not appeal to me, much, there are some finer points on the album that I find myself happy to have heard and which I still find myself putting on when picking out songs on my iPod. The musical part of the album is really good, it is the vocals that I am having a hard time with, as they are oh so dark and depressing. While it is all in English at times I am having problems understanding what it is that they are trying to convey with the lyrics, possibly caused by my inability to decipher the raw outlet for deep thoughts and feelings that this album supposedly presents.
I shall leave it to our readers to determine what to think of Mortal Aspirations. Trusting you to do as fine a job as I, in that. Die-hard fans to the doom scene may actually see this as, if not a refreshing album, at least an effort in expressing feelings that lurk beneath the surface of us all.
