Nashville Pussy came together in 1996, formed by guitarist/vocalist Blaine Cartwright after the disbandment of his former project, Nine Pound Hammer. The name for the band was taken from an introduction to Ted Nugent’s song “Wang Dang Sweet Poontang†from the album “Double Live Gonzoâ€. Along with his wife Ruyter Suys on guitar, Corey Parks (sister of former NBA basketball player Cherokee Parks) on bass and Jeremy Thompson on drums, Cartwright began working on the material for the group’s debut album. “Let Them Eat Pussy†was eventually released in 1998 through The Enclave Records. As Ruyter Suys commented on the LP’s content: “We were tired of seeing and hearing bands that were just going through rock 101 motions, all slick but with no real soul. So we decided to play the kind of music that we would like to hear.†“Let Them Eat Pussy†achieved a cult status and spawned the band’s first hit – the song “Fried Chicken And Coffeeâ€, which was nominated for the 1999 Grammy Awards in the Best Metal Performance category. The follow-up album, “High As Hellâ€, was released in 2000 and brought yet another collection of gut-wrenching rock’n’roll tunes, revealing a certain progress in the band’s songwriting skills. “Say Something Nastyâ€, Nashville Pussy’s third LP, hit the stores in 2002, introducing new bassist Katielyn Campbell (known from the band C’mon) who replaced Corey Parks.
The fans had to wait three whole years for Nashville Pussy’s fourth full-length offering. Released through Spitfire Records, “Get Some†proved to be the band’s best effort yet, delivering thirteen straight-forward 4/4 rock crunchers. Recorded with new bass player Karen Cuda (this way creating arguably Nashville Pussy’s best line-up to date), the LP introduced a heavier, much more metal oriented style than on the previous albums, kicking the listener straight in the face with some truly relentless riffage. The best examples of that are such songs as the opener “Pussy Time†and the drum-possessed “Hell Ain’t What It Used To Beâ€. On some of the tracks, Blaine’s voice is quite similar to Alice Cooper, while still retaining the dirty Southern feel. Also his lyrics saw some changes, revealing a certain ‘profoundness’ here and there, but still sticking mainly to what the group knows best: partying, drinking, fucking and basically having a good time. Nashville Pussy included two smokin’ cover versions on “Get Someâ€: “Nutbush City Limits†by Ike & Tina Turner and “Snowblind†by Ace Frehley, both of which are by many fans considered superior to the originals. Two tracks from the album – “Come On Come On†and “Hate & Whiskey†– were featured in the video game “Jackass: The Gameâ€. After the release of “Get Someâ€, Nashville Pussy went on an extensive, which resulted in recording the band’s first DVD: “Live in Hollywoodâ€. In February 2009 the group released their fifth album called “From Hell To Texasâ€.
Nashville Pussy is currently one of the top bands playing uncompromised, straight-forward, whiskey-driven rock. Their music is the quintessence of the word “fun†and “Get Some†remains one of their finest works, perfectly blending all the essential ingredients of the genre into one mean sonic bitchslap. For all those who seek some genuine hillbilly rock’n’roll, Nashville Pussy is the number one choice.
