Wild Rose Angel Productions, 2009
Before listening to this new album by a Greek artist and guitar virtuoso Ioannis Anastassakis I decided to read his biography and it scared me a bit. For how to approach and deal with a record done by a guy who has an MA in Guitar Performance (completed by the best possible grade) and a guy who’s been studying guitar playing at most famous Greek and American musical institutes and universities. This is not all; it is only a beginning as Ioannis has taken lessons from the likes of Steve Vai, Marty Friedman, Paul Gilbert, John Petrucci, Mike Stern etc, while at the same time working on his own projects.
Even though his CV is impressive I decided to focus on his latest release entitled Orbital Attempt without any prejudices and despite of the fact that Instrumental Rock/Fusion as I would call his playing, is not my most favourite musical style. Orbital Attempt is simply nicely designed album, with great layout (ex. with an 8-page full colour insert) artwork and most importantly the whole sound. His style of playing ranges from Flamenco to some power metal shred and neck racing metal, he manages it all almost to perfection. When one thinks that he can’t surprise you any more, he pulls out yet another beautiful melody and with nice catchy sound that is constantly in the focus of his attention. The CD consists of nine regular and two bonus tracks “Guest Solos 2008” and “The Greek Guitar Power Jam” backing track and I honestly think that all of the tracks are similar, but in a positive way as they all together make a never-ending story that is dragging you into the world of Ioannis. Having said all this nonsense I would finish this feedback by asking you to give Orbital Attempt a chance it deserves.
This album is a best example of some amusing instrumental guitar playing one can possibly imagine. It does not only deserve to be played in your stereo for many years to come, but it also deserves a place at the top shell of every musical story out there. Simply amazing if you’re into this particular artistic form.
