I’m not an expert in grind core, but since I’m the only one that is available for reviews at the moment I decided to give it a try. Cerebral Turbulency is one of these bands that we have written on before, but the reason for writing on them again is the release of their new album Segregace K Nule. Normally I would say a quite odd title for an album, but since it is a piece of grind core, nothing really surprises me anymore.
For those of you familiar with the band you would know that they are coming from Czech Republic where some pretty good metal has been released in the countries of the former Eastern Bloc in later years. First thing anyone notice about this record are the song titles, being incomprehensible and odd. Next to the song titles one notice shear brutality and quick blasting tracks most of the time accompanied by some guttural and gurgling vocal lines. Majority of the songs are very short, in a real grind-core manner. Take for instance an opening track called “!dobrý Den!” (My limited knowledge of this language indicates to me that it means “Good Day”?!), which is only 56 seconds long ear-assault.
To times you’ll also be able to hear some groovy riffs which work just fine with this unusual and odd atmosphere throughout the whole record. The best thing about this album is the vocals raging from guttural, grunting, and grotesque to more interesting and approachable metal ones. Frontman is also capable of communicating with, and appeal to, the listener as he uses a wide range of vocal patterns, making this release everything but boring.
In addition to what has been said earlier, I find the production part to be very fresh and diverse sounding pretty heavy. Segregace K Nule is nowhere near to become my favourite grind-core album in 2008, but it is definitely the best one that Cerebral Turbulency has ever released. If you enjoy listening to Fuck the Facts, Nasum, Antigama and similar acts, then I’m sure you’ll dig this 17-tracker too.
