Scum, 2008
Saasta is a 5-song recording of dark and raw death metal from Finnish metallers Ydin. The band was formed in autumn of 2003 and already had incredible discography behind it with a compilation appearance, demo release, full-length and a DVD-R release. From the very first moment things were clear; band wanted to play their metal very fast, raw and clear. Apart from this; the lyrics have always been in Finnish (with English translation in the booklet). Despite of the fact that I don’t understand a single word of this strange language I must say that the fact that lyrics are in Finnish somehow adds this extra dimension and mysticism into their music. After few line-up changes (read: difficulties) the release of Saasta can almost serve as a proof of an old saying: ‘what doesn’t kill you, makes you stronger’. The sound is sick and twisted showing brutal sides of human mind, as they put it themselves. The songs are well played and it is also very clear that the band has some ideas and knows in what direction they tend to move. On the other hand they lack to transfer those ideas and this tremendous energy into something captivating. Songs are just not those that stick to your head and you go like singing them all day long. This record is hard to swallow and adapt to, you have to at least give it few listenings before it begins to grow. The production is decent with few thin moments, with ex. guitars missing some punch and force. If you’re into different and raw death metal, even sung in Finnish, then this might be the right choice for you. Additional note; this CD contains also previous demo releases and live videos in data format, which is really a plus that will draw the score a bit higher than deserved initially.
