Illdisposed. Denmarks finest death metal band along side legendary Panzerchrist. Few bands have achieved such popularity and gathered such a following as Illdisposed has. I talked to the guys about their newest effort “The Prestige†a brutal album which has been well received by the media.
MR: Ten albums and sixteen years down the road. How’s Illdisposed today? ILL: Old and tired. Fat. Backpains. Can’t get any sleep because the neighbour car alarm starts every night. The record company has, for the fourth time, paid our royalties late. They even forgot to pay my phone bill so no interviews for me this week. Someone pressed the “Suck†button.
MR: With the release of The Prestige do you feel that Illdisposed is at it best? ILL: Certainly not. You quickly learn not to think that the new album is flawless. If you ask again in a few years its more likely that I’d say yes. Its easier to view thinks in the rear view. I mean youre always a tad to ecstatic over the new record once its done, its like having a baby, you’ve worked for nine months or more with the shit and you finally see the result.
MR: So how was the recording of The Prestige? ILL: As per usual there were a ton of problems, but it came out alright. We were two weeks late initially because Thomas had to attend a celebration of some sort, and then we had some dates in Germany we had to play. Then came the problems with the record company not paying the studio on time. I had to threaten them with battery and all sorts of stuff before they understood that we were pissed off with them.
MR: Any favoured songs so far? ILL: I think that â€A Child Is Missing†is one of the best tracks I’ve ever written. When I was writing it, it kind of felt like when I was writing “Dark†of the “Vindication†record. Besides that I think that “Weak Is Your God†is awesome. I generally think that the songs are greater this time around, can’t put my finger on one song that really sucks, and I’m usually good at that.
MR: What’s the theme you find on The Prestige? ILL: According to Bo (lead singer) it about sexual submissiveness. Perhaps his wife’s beating him, but I don’t see her having that side to her, nor do I see it in him. He’s generally quick and generous with beating. But on the other side you hear about people with power who wants to be slapped around by the wife while wearing a diaper and stuff.
MR: The Prestige is by far a technically brutal masterpjece. How was the process of making the album previous to the recording of it. ILL: I wrote all 12 numbers before we ever reheatsed a single one of them. I have a small home studio where I record all the things I make with along with a drum machine. We live in four different towns so its not like we meet once a week to rehearse like a lot of other bands do it.
MR: Bo Summers vocal has become characteristic for Illdisposed as well as Panzerchrist. How did it come about? ILL: I think that with growling you either have it or you haven’t go tit. Whether Bo has it or not can be discussed, I think he has it. When listening to this kind of screaming it’s a big plus that you can hear what is being screamed. You don’t have to sit around with the lyrics while listening to make out the works. Some singers you cant even understand what’s being said while reading back the lyrics that’s just crap if you ask me.
MR: Franz Hellboss has just joined Illdisposed after leaving danish Heavy Metal band Volbeat. Has he had a say on The Prestige? ILL: None whatsoever. The record was written when he joined. But he is one of his old friends and we had him in mind when we decided on Martin instead. He played with Volbeat so we just took Martin instead. But things are great with Franz we get along well and we all just looooooove his leather vest with built in speakers.
MR: Any last words for fans and readers of Metal-Revolution.com ILL: Hopefully we’ll see all of you out there! And if any one should be thinking of it. Tonny’s the one who has pimped my ride.
