After watching Mevadio a few times on stage, I thought now is the time to talk to any of them in person for a short interview. The release of their new opus entitled “Fresh Kill Daily” is the great excuse for wanting to talk to them just about now. So here’re the results of my conversation with band’s singer Kruger.
MR: Hey guys from Mevadio. What’s new in your camp? Kruger (K): Whole lotta stuff actually! We´re working with Danish label Drug(s)/Mighty Music again and are just about to release our second full-length, entitled Fresh Kill Daily. Besides that we´ve hooked up with 3rd Tsunami booking agency and are right now plannig a musicvideo to promote the album.
MR: For the readers that yet haven’t heard of you, how would you describe your sound? K: Well in Mevadio we´ve allways tried to do our own thing, not listening too much to what critics, fans ect. Wanted us to do or sound like – and of course we hope that stands out in our music. Apart from that, you probably never can deny your influences and we´ve all listened to the bay area bands and classic heavy rock while growing up. So it would be fair to say that we exist of part trash, metal and rock elements. Place us somewhere in between Slayer and the Cult if you like. MR: …and your discography so far? K: A couple of ep´s Facing a boring day and Living dead. Our debut Hands Down and of course Fresh Kill Daily.
MR: Have there been any changes in line-up since the beginning? K: Thomas entered the band 3 years ago, after we discovered that I suck at playing guitar while singing, but besides that we´ve stucked together so far... actually you can leave the “while singing” part out, I just suck at playing guitar overall, ha. MR: Now tell us something about your new record Fresh Kill Daily? Where and when was it recorded? K: Since our first lousy demo we´ve worked exclusively with Tue Madsen at his Antfarm studios in Aarhus, but this time most of the vocals were recorded with Ziggy in Zigzound – the rest was done at Antfarm as usually. The album was mixed this summer and since then we´ve just waited for it to hit the stores.
MR: It was released on Drugs/Target, right? Are you happy for their support so far? K: Right - Drugs and Target is a bunch of metalheads! They seem to be driven by part business part love for the music, wich is great. Target is a valuable player in Danish music and hopefully we´ll benefit from that.
MR: Is it easier to have a label from Denmark in order to communicate easier etc.? K: Definetly.
MR: Who was responsible for the lyrics this time around? Where do you guys find inspiration when writing lyrics? K: Well Kenneth came up with a couple of titels and concepts this time, besides from that I wrote everything as I´ve allways done in Mevadio. The lyrics on Fresh Kill Daily evolves around sacrifices - expressed in a wide range of forms: From the small compromises nessesary to make your everyday life with all it´s routines possible, to the slaying of your loved ones, done just to achieve that moment of piece, we all need now and then. A part of the lyrics this time originate from conversations I´ve overheard or people I´ve observed, and if you look close enough, human stupidity, wich I find very inspiring, is everywhere...(Laughing) ...if not, you can allways filck on the TV for the doze that gets your hate rising. (Laughing)
MR: But first and foremost you’re a live band?! Have you played any new songs for the audience and what has been the reaction of the fans and the media to Fresh Kill Daily so far? K: Playing live is always important for a band like ours, if you can’t cut in on stage - you´re dead. So we spend a lot of time getting in shape for the tour, wich kicks of January 2008. We´ve released 2 songs from the album at myspace and so far people seem positive...
MR: So nothing you would like to change if you could? Anything you would approach differently if you’re to start all over again? K: Personally I´d probably skip the last Arnbitter I drank after supporting Testament a couple of years ago, it made me collapse and I woke up at the hospital next morning... never mix snaps and Arnbitter my friends! Besides from that...hmm...nothing.
MR: What are your favourite tracks form this new album? K: I really dig the chorus in the “Abusers manual”, the closest I´ll ever get to sounding a bit like Rob Halford... riffwise it must be “5 Necessary Kills”...
MR: I guess you’re soon heading on tour in order to promote your new material? K: Yeah as mentioned we´ll play Danish venues from january to april 2008.
MR: What’s your all time best live performance and why? K: We´ve been blessed with some great supportslots in the past: Sepultura, Testament, Entombed and quite a few gigs with Danish Hatesphere – all killer, but for me the biggest experience has to be Roskilde Festival in 2004 where people screamed their fucking lungs out for us....what a pleasure!
MR: Have you played more times outside of Denmark? K: No, but we hope this album will change that fact.
MR: Do you have a solid fan-base and is it important for you to stay in touch with your fans? K: Sure, the most important thing is that dedicated bunch of people - the ones that allways shows up at the gigs and supports you whenever you´re around. I think that 10 hardcore fans sell more records for you than a 100 good reviews.
MR: I guess you’re right on that one. Say your last words in order to end this interview. K: Fresh Kill Daily out January 28th og spil nu noget med Slayer! Cheers!
MR: Last sentence meaning: ‘Play some Slayer’… (Laughing).
